Moving Auckland’s critical transport projects into the fast lane for completion is exactly the backing Auckland needs, says Auckland Chamber of Commerce head Michael Barnett.

“Yes, putting Auckland’s transport investment on notice to be fast-tracked is great for Auckland, but it is also good for New Zealand.”

“Auckland can celebrate, but so can New Zealand, given the city’s global city role.”

The accelerated transport investment programme announced by Prime Minister John Key is conditional only on the projects meeting certain performance targets. “Auckland shouldn’t be worried about that,” said Mr Barnett.

The strong signal of Government’s preparedness to invest in Auckland’s three highest priority transport infrastructure projects – in order, the AMETI & East-West Link, a Waitemata Harbour tunnel, and the City Rail Link – is significant.

“It is now crucial that Auckland’s leadership shifts its focus from advocating for decisions on Auckland’s transport wish list of pet projects to confirming the strongest possible business case and implementation programme to deliver an integrated transport network as fast as possible.”

“This will require leadership from Auckland as a whole and not a one-man leadership,” urged Mr Barnett.

Auckland’s business community has always talked about the need for building an integrated network which offers Aucklanders options. Plainly, the announcement today confirms Government agrees with this agenda.
