Five Minutes with Sian Jaquet
Sian Jaquet is a life coach and presented TV’s ‘The Big Stuff. In between speaking engagements, coaching and writing for media, Sian is working on an exciting new TV series, ‘Starting Over’, where women from various walks of life, change and rethink their lives.
We caught up with Sian and asked her a few questions about her life.
Why did you become a life coach?
I’ve always enjoyed motivating and helping people – whether it was at my drama school, teaching or on boards. It wasn’t until I started coaching that I realised I had the ability to help people to change their lives and to question themselves, “Do I really want this?”
What is your greatest achievement?
My 23 years of marriage.
Do you think everyone needs a life coach?
Yes, today’s world has changed so dramatically that emotional contact is dissipated through time and space and it’s very easy to become critical of ourselves. It’s good to have someone like a life coach who wants the best for you and doesn’t have an agenda.
Did you have a mentor?
Yes, my teacher when I was eleven years’ old. I had significant learning difficulties as a child and was the first person in the UK to be officially diagnosed with dyslexia – this teacher saw things in me that others didn’t. She was the first person outside of my family who showed me unconditional love.
Do you have a life coach?
Yes, a lady I trained with. She’s a great inspiration and keeps me honest. She’s the only women who can stand toe to toe with me.
You mentioned you work for the government too, what do you do?
I’m chair of a grievance panel which manages complaints for New Zealand’s largest adolescence secure unit. I can’t keep away from young people who need support.
What would you grab first if your house was on fire?
Naturally, I would be making sure all family members and my dog, Harvey, were safe. I can’t think of any possessions that mean that much to me. It’s the people that bring meaning to my life.
How do you like to spend your free time?
There’s nothing I like more than serving up a meal with close family and friends.
