Jintan City – small in size, big in volume
A Chinese delegation from the City of Jintan visited Auckland Chamber of Commerce in July.
Located in the Jiangsu Province and in the heart of the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), Jintan is located at the junction of 17 major cities of the Delta, including Shanghai, Nanjing and Wuhu.
With approximately half a million inhabitants in an urban area of about 20sq. km, Jintan is a relatively small city in Chinese terms, but of great economic importance, especially due to the prominent textile and garment industry. The majority of the garment industry subcontracts for manufacturing and over 90% of the products are exported on a worldwide basis as many well- known brands (Nike, Lee, Adidas and Gap).
“The statistics are impressive. One out of twenty people in the world wears an item of Jintan-manufactured clothing, and 10% of all men’s shirts (from T-shirts to casual to dress shirts) are produced there” said Nathalie Malfeyt, Chamber International Manager who hosted the delegation.
Other pillar industries of the Jiangsu Province include agriculture (especially crab), mechanics, electronics and salt chemicals.
