Small Island Developing States report August 2014
The Private Sector Partnerships Forum was convened in the lead up to the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS), by the Government of the Independent State of Samoa, in partnership with representatives from the United Nations and the Samoa Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Held from 30 – 31 August, the pre-conference event brought together 400 participants from the private sector, governments, civil society, inter-governmental organisations and the UN system.
The Forum focused on seven thematic areas:
- Oceans and Marine Resources
- Connectivity (through ICTs and Transport)
- Sustainable Agriculture
- Sustainable Tourism
- Disaster Risk Reduction
- Renewable Energy and Financing
- Support Measures for SIDS Private Sector
As an immediate result of the Forum, 20 concrete partnerships, initiatives and recommendations were announced and a SIDS Global Business Network was established. Other initiatives included a farm to table initiative announced by Samoa Women in Business, and a job scheme was created by a major Cruise Liner to provide employment to Vanuatu and other Pacific Island citizens on their cruise liners.
Auckland Chamber of Commerce international manager Nathalie Malfeyt said it was the first time that a dedicated private sector forum was organised on the margins of a SIDS conference.
“The Forum has set a precedent for further strengthening collaboration with the private sector and fostering partnerships – nationally, regionally and internationally – to support SIDS efforts in achieving their sustainable development aspirations”.
